Memorial Video for a Funeral: Length, Photos, Cost

We are sorry for your loss. A memorial video is a short film of their photos, set to music, played at the funeral, the visitation or the celebration of life.

Length: 3 to 6 minutes for most services.

Photos: 36 to 70, at about 5 seconds each.

File: an MP4, brought on a USB stick and tested on the venue's screen.

Cost: free if you make it yourself; about $129 to $299 done for you; premium studios about $599 to $695.

What a memorial video is

Photos from across a life, one after another, each with a little gentle motion, usually with their name and dates at the start and a favorite portrait at the end. It plays on the screen at the service and can be shared afterward with family who could not be there.

A sample film (2:52): Faro and Doris Caudill and their daughter, homesteaders in Pie Town, New Mexico, in 1940, made from public-domain Library of Congress photographs by Russell Lee. Your film uses only your photos.

How long should it be?

Three to six minutes suits most services: long enough to show a life, short enough to hold a room. At about 5 seconds a photo, 30 photos run about 3 minutes and 60 photos about 5 to 6, including the open and close. For a visitation, the same film can loop.

What music works

One or two calm songs that meant something to them. Check the lyrics suit the room, and ask the funeral home whether the venue can play sound. Every Remembered Film comes with original instrumental music composed for it. Requests for specific songs are not available.
